WORRIED SICK | I can’t help but (não consigo deixar de) fear what my girlfriend’s creepy (estranho, sinistro, assustador) boss will do next.
DEAR DEIDRE: EVERY day I worry about my girlfriend when she leaves for work.
Her boss is a total creep (canalha, asqueroso, tarado) and I can’t help but fear what he’ll do next.
I’m 37, my girlfriend is 34 and we’ve been together for four years.
She works for a marketing firm (empresa de marketing) and her boss is a man in his 60s.
Since the day she started, he has always made her feel slightly (ligeiramente) uncomfortable, but recently things have escalated (pioraram, intensificaram).
She very often notices him gawking at (olhar embasbacado/boquiaberto/fixamente) her from across the office and he’s never shy about making passing comments (fazer comentários casuais/inadequados) about her appearance.
On one occasion he made a comment about wanting to “work her hard” (que ela trabalhe muito, ou faça coisas sugestivas).
Just last week she came home in tears (em lágrimas) after he had purposely brushed (passou, roçou) his hand over her leg.
I’ve begged her to report him but she keeps telling me that she’s afraid of losing her job. I can’t stand (não suporto) the thought of him near her every day. I’m worried sick (preocupado ao extremo).
DEIDRE SAYS: His behaviour is completely inappropriate and needs to be challenged.
It’s important that you talk to her again.
Tell her how worried you are and stress (enfatize) the importance of talking to her HR department (departamento de Recursos Humanos), to get advice on how to handle (lidar) this.
If she’s still too concerned to take this any further (levar isso adiante), she can contact Acas (www.acas.org.uk, 0300 123 1100), which provides free, confidential advice on workplace issues (questões no local de trabalho).
