TOO SHY | I’m so shy (tímido) I can’t get a job – but now my girlfriend won’t make our relationship official because of it.

DEAR DEIDRE: MY girlfriend won’t make our relationship official because I am unemployed.

She isn’t prepared to introduce me to her parents until I have a job.

I do want to work but I don’t have a lot of confidence.

I would need to find an employer (empregador) who is understanding of that.

I have wanted to work for a long time, but I’m worried about being sacked (ser demitido) or having to leave because I can’t do the work.

Is there any way I can get into employment (entrar no mercado de trabalho) or try to gain qualifications?

I want to actually do something with my life. I am so bored (entediado) at home.

I am 28 and my girlfriend is 26. We have been dating for two months.

I love her and want to be able to show her I am ambitious. I’d like to be able to support her financially when she needs me.

DEIDRE SAYS: Having confidence is essential to job search success. If you don’t believe in yourself it’s best to build your self-worth (autoestima, valor próprio) before you start searching.

Finding work isn’t easy and it can be particularly hard if you’ve been unemployed for a while (há um tempo).

Volunteering is a great way to build self-esteem, motivation and a sense of self-worth.

Helping others gives a great sense of satisfaction which in turn (por sua vez) does wonders (faz maravilhas/milagres) for your confidence.
