OUT OF LUCK (sem sorte) | Man won fortune on £2billion lottery after psychic (vidente, médium, adivinho)’s shock prediction – but cruel twist (reviravolta, mudança) means he’ll never touch winnings (ganhos, prêmios).

A MAN who won an incredible prize in a £2billion lottery never got to (conseguir, ter oportunidade de, chegar a) spend any of it due to (devido a) a cruel twist of fate (ironia do destino).

Retired miner (mineiro, minerador, garimpeiro) Jesus Martinez, 88, won £1.07m in the Spanish Christmas Lottery on December 22.

Jesus had claimed (afirmar) a fortune teller (cartomante, adivinho, vidente) predicted he would one day become a millionaire – and eventually it came true (tornar realidade).

However, Martinez tragically died just four months after his massive win having never been able to spend any of his newfound (recém-descoberto) fortune.

In December of last year, Jesus had trusted his instincts and won his prize of £1.07million (€1.2million) with his lucky numbers 05490 in Christmas El Gordo draw (sorteio) in Madrid.

The £2billion festive draw (sorteio festivo) has been held (realizado) annually in the country since 1812 and is famous for turning Spaniards, as well as lucky Brits, into (tranformar) millionaires overnight (da noite para o dia).

Lotto chiefs paid out the huge win in instalments (parcelas, prestações) and Jesus had only had enough time to receive his first three instalments.

He had deposited the first two instalments in his bank account, but it’s currently unclear what Jesus did with the third lot, although some reports suggest that he gave it away (doar).

One of his friends, who has not been named, said: “Unfortunately, he only had four months to enjoy the large prize.”

His friend said that Jesus often said that a gypsy (cigano) woman had read his cards and predicted that he would be a millionaire.

The former miner had also been awarded (recebeu, ganhou) a gold badge (distintivo) from his city council (câmara municipal, prefeitura) in Aller for his dedication to helping those in the municipality.

Jesus’s cause of death has not been reported.

It is uncertain what will happen to the rest of his winnings, which has yet to be fully paid out.
