BABY BLUES | My husband’s so lazy that he wishes we got a dog instead of (em vez de, ao invés de) having a baby.

DEAR DEIDRE: MY husband wishes we had got a dog instead of having a baby. I’m gutted (desapontado, arrasado).

I’m totally in love with our six-month-old daughter but he told me he doesn’t like being a dad, and misses our old, care-free (livre de preocupações) life.

We have been married for three years. I’m 36 and he’s 35.

While I was desperate to have a child, he had mixed feelings (ter sentimentos contraditórios) about it.

I pushed him into (pressionar) starting a family and hoped he’d change his mind once our daughter was born.

Unfortunately, he hasn’t bonded with her (criar laços, unir). He has admitted he’s selfish and lazy – and only now do I see how true that is.

We’re arguing a lot and he’s moved into the spare room (quarto de hóspedes), for a proper night’s sleep. But he’s miserable (muito mal, péssimo) and it’s affecting our relationship.

I know he loves our daughter but he also resents (ficar ressentido com) her.

The dog comment was the last straw (a gota d’água, o cúmulo, o fim da picada). I don’t want to bring her up (criar, educar) in a broken home (lar destruído, família dividida) but we can’t carry on like this.

DEIDRE SAYS: Having a new baby is a stressful time and puts relationships under pressure, even when both partners are happy to be parents.

Your husband probably feels left out (excluído, abandonado) and anxious about the future.

Tell him how worried you are. Ask to work this out (resolver) together, otherwise you face losing each other and your family.
