> SIMPLE PAST

I/you/we/they/he/she/it:
worked | liked | drank | lived | saw | took

> regular verbs > ed
kissed | watched | washed | stayed | started | cleaned 

> irregular verbs
go > went | eat > ate | write > wrote | know > knew | think > thought | wear > wore

> verbs that end in > y (preceded by a consonant) y changes to i and ed is added.
tried | studied | cried | copied

No change when a y is preceded by a vowel.
played | enjoyed | stayed

> Sometimes a verb ends in a CVC (consonant / vowel / consonant)

For example: stop, plan, drop, permit. Before ed > We double the final consonant.
planned | dropped | permitted | stopped | occurred | omitted | referred

But we don’t double if the last part of the word is not stressed.

> Simple Past Usage:

• Used to show that you are talking about something that has already happened.
• Used for actions that started and finished at a specific time in the past.
• It’s often used for stories or lists of events.

Examples sentences:

1. I lived in Italy when I was a kid.
2. My father worked in a bank from 1976 to 1989.
3. Yesterday it rained all morning.
4. I bought a new shirt last week.
5. We enjoyed the party last night. We danced a lot and talked to a lot of friends.
6. The match ended at midnight.
7. When I was a child, I wanted to be a footballer.
8. I washed my car last week.
9. My parents left home very early yesterday.
10. It was hot in the office, so I opened the window.
11. The accident happened last Friday.
12. Yesterday I went to the theater.
13. She watched TV last night.

> Simple Past Negative:

Negative and Short form

I did not work. (I didn’t work)

you did not work. (you didn’t work)

he did not work. (he didn’t work)

she did not work. (she didn’t work)

it did not work. (it didn’t work)

we did not work. (we didn’t work)

you did not work. (you didn’t work)

they did not work. (they didn’t work)

Examples sentences:

1. He didn’t like the film.
2. I didn’t take the bus, I went on foot.
3. She didn’t drink coffee this morning.
4. We didn’t watch TV last night.
5. My sister didn’t have a good holiday.
6. My brother didn’t buy the book.
7. I didn’t know where to go.
8. Jane didn’t enjoy the flight.
9. I didn’t sleep well last night.
10. My parents did not like the food.
11. My uncle didn’t know the answer.

> Simple Past – Interrogative and Negative questions :

Did we…?	Didn’t we…?

> Wh- questions and word order: Question word + did + subject + verb.
Where +did +you+ go?

Examples sentences:

1. Did you talk to her yesterday?
2. Did she visit her parents last weekend?
3. Didn’t he know about that?
4. Did your friends enjoy the party?
5. Didn’t you know the answer?
6. What did you do last night?
7. Where did you go last week?
8. How did the accident happen?
9. Why did you complain about the food?
10. How much did it cost?
11. Did you go to Portugal last year?
12. Did your brother stay in a hotel?
13. Didn’t you go to the gym?

Short answers
Yes, I/we/you/they/he/she/it did.	No, I/we/you/they/he/she/it didn’t.

Examples sentences:

1. Did you see my father yesterday? No, I didn’t.
2. Did you sleep well? Yes, I did.
3. Did your boyfriend enjoy the match? No, he didn’t.
4. Did Sabrina come to the party? Yes, she did.
5. Did he finish work early? No, he didn’t.
